Remove negative items from your credit report

It goes without saying that you should be checking your credit report at least once a year. For one thing, it can help you monitor identity theft, and make sure that nobody is using your name and social security number without you knowing about it. For another thing, there could be erroneous, negative information on your credit report that you don’t even know about.

So, the first step is to actually check your credit report from one of the three major credit reporting agencies. You will want to go through annualcreditreport.com so that it is actually free to check.

Next, go through and mark all of the items that are negative, whether they are true or not true. If they are not true, fill out a dispute form immediately, so as to alert the credit reporting agency about it, and hopefully get it removed as painlessly as possible. If it is true, you can still file a dispute form, and you might get lucky and have it removed if the credit reporting agency is unable to verify it.

For negative items that are true, you should see if there is anything that you can do to rectify the situation and get it removed. For example, if you have an old, unpaid bill, it might be a good idea to contact the company you haven’t paid, and see if you can get it resolved through some type of payment plan, or some other way that will satisfy both you and them. If you are able to do that, it should clear up your credit report in time.

After you have gone through all of your disputes and attempts to remove the negative items, then request a new credit report and try again! Hopefully you will have gotten rid of most of the items, but you will want to be persistent, since removing those will be a huge help to your credit.
